Allwarden recently completed work on Katie Robbins’ series, “Sunny,” cutting Episodes 2, 4, and 8. The series follows Suzie Sakamoto (Rashida Jones), an American living in Japan, who is thrust into a mystery after her husband Masa (Hidetoshi Nishijima) and son Zen (Fares Belkheir) disappear in a plane crash. Set in a near-future Japan, Suzie receives a robot named Sunny (voiced by Joanna Sotomura), programmed by Masa, as a condolence gift.

Allwarden’s genre-spanning background proved crucial in her work on “Sunny,” a show that blends various tones and genres, requiring a nuanced and instinctive touch.

Flickers' Rhode Island International Film Festival is now in its 22nd year and is ranked as one of the top 10 U.S. festivals. It is New England’s only Academy Award-qualifying festival.

OVERCOMPENSATING editors Todd and Amelia often leaned on each other for perspective throughout the post process. Editing comedy, as Amelia noted, involves understanding the micro-timing of jokes — knowing precisely when to cut away or linger, to maximize comedic impact.  Todd echoes this sentiment, explaining that edits can drastically influence the pacing and timing essential for landing a joke. Ultimately, the collaborative dynamic between the two allowed them to strike a balance between comedy and the series' more serious undertones.

Editors Amelia Allwarden, ACE, and Anna Hauger, ACE, played a pivotal role in shaping the ambitious series, which premiered to much anticipation and aired through December 22.

Tasked with balancing intricate plotlines and a sprawling ensemble cast, the duo edited three out of six episodes, including the high-stakes finale. Their efforts required creative problem-solving, from condensing a two-hour cut to crafting seamless transitions between reality and dream sequences. Allwarden and Hauger’s collaborative vision extends beyond the edit suite, with Anna also serving as an associate producer and both working closely with VFX teams to refine the show’s visual storytelling.
